The
Role of Copper in the Body The Role of Copper in the Body Copper, an essential micronutrient, is the third most abundant trace element found in the body. It has been shown to play a vital role in activation of key enzyme systems specific to tissue formation and repair. (1) Wound healing involves a natural
cascade of events. Initially, an inflammatory response occurs which is necessary for
natural sterilization of the area, clotting and preparation of the wound for its natrual
progress towards closure. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel - Its Role in Wound Management The unique tripetide - GHK - acts as a delivery system for copper to the wound site. The body's natural wound healing cascade is then triggered. Research shows that peptide-copper-containing compounds act on each of the primary stages of wound repair. ProCyte Corporation, Redmond, WA Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel Purified Water, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Benzyl Alcohol, Prezatide Copper Acetate (PCA), Sodium Chloride. A hydrogel for the dressing and management of lick granulomas, acute or chronic wounds and dermatological disorders, including partial and full-thickness wounds, skin ulcerations, pressure sores, burns, postoperative incisions, suture line dehiscence, fistulas, cuts, puncture wounds, abrasions, and other general dermatologic conditions. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel provides an improved healing environment for wounds and dermatological disorders. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel contains copper, which is complexed to the peptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine (GHK) to form prezatide copper acetate (PCA). GHK is a naturally occurring peptide found in several biological fluids, including plasma. A synthetic form of GHK, used in the preparation of the copper complex, acts as a controlled delivery system for copper to the wound site. It is well established that copper is essential for many important functions in the body, including wound healing. Normal wound healing is a cascade of events which involves the interaction of various cell types in an organized manner. It is generally characterized by three stages of healing: the inflammation phase, the proliferation phase, and the regeneration phase. PCA has been shown to enhance tissue repair through 1) attraction of multiple cell types (macrophages, monocytes and mast cells) to the wound site, 2) introduction of new capillary growth, and 3) stimulation of granulation tissue formation. Nonclinical studies in experimentally wounded rats and pigs have shown a significant increase in the rate of formation of extracellular matrix components (e.g., collagen and proteoglycans) following PCA treatment when compared to controls. Topical treatment with a PCA containing gel also has been shown to significantly accelerate the rate of wound closure in experimentally created dermal wounds in dogs when compared to either vehicle or untreated wounds.(2) Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel The Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel technology has been scientifically and medically documented in animal and human studies and has been detailed in numerous peer-reviewed journal articles. PCA has been tested in a number of wound or skin-related applications including full or partial-thickness lesions of the skin, skin ulcerations, suture line dehiscence, fistulous tracts, and skin irritations and eruptions. Primary findings include reduction of inflammation which accompanies infection, formation of a natural protective barrier, enhancement of vascularization and granulation tissue formation, and acceleration of wound contraction and epithelialization. In most cases, results were observed in clinical conditions which previously had been unresponsive to standard therapy. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel has been evaluated for safety using standard biocompatibility testing methods, and has been found to be safe to use as indicated. Adverse effects have not been encountered with topically applied Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel. The copper content in this product is well below the level associated with induction of systemic or organ toxicity. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel should not be used as a primary treatment for ongoing infections. In case of persistent inflammation, consult your veterinarian and discontinue treatment. In the case of deep wounds or serious burns, use only as recommended by a veterinarian. Emesis could occur in dogs if greater than 90 grams of Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel are ingested. Each tube of Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel should be used by one animal only in order to reduce the risk of cross infection. As needed, first debride and cleanse the wound with a suitable wound cleanser. Apply Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel to sufficiently cover the entire area of the wound. The severity of the wound or disruption of the skin will determine the frequency of administration. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel can be applied to the affected area with or without a dressing, up to four times per day. As the wound or dermatologic disorder improves, Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel applications are required less frequently. When dressings are required, best results may be obtained using non- or semi-occlusive materials. If sterile gauze is used as an overdressing, it may be moistened. Application to minor skin abrasions, irritations, or rashes may best be accomplished by gently massaging the gel into the affected area. Typically, a partial-thickness wound of approximately 20 sq. cm. wound will require 1 to 2 c.c. (about 1-2 grams) per application. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel may be used in combination with a topical or systemic antibiotic. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel While beneficial to most wounds and skin conditions, Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel may be contraindicated in typically hyper-granulating wounds such as lower limb wounds in horses. Store at room temperature. Do not freeze. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel is available in 15 gram (0.5 oz) and 90 gram (3 oz) sizes. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel Partial-Thickness Wounds/Burns: A five-month-old miniature horse had two partial-thickness wounds located on the dorsal midline. The wounds had persisted for 5 weeks with minimal improvement in condition or healing. At the time of initiating treatment with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel, the caudal wound measured 6 x 15 cm (tear-shaped), and the cranial wound measured approximately 3 cm in diameter. The beginning of re-epithelialization was evident by treatment Day 4. The cranial wound was clinically healed by Day 11 with an excellent appearance. The larger caudal wound was completely healed via re-epithelialization by Day 27 with no scar. A thirteen-year old gelding sustained a severe rope burn which removed all skin from an area just above the rear hoof. The wound was kept clean and treated with Furacin® ointment. The wound was inflamed and caused the horse discomfort when walking. Over a period of ten days, the owner felt that the wound was not responding to the Furacin® treatment. Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel treatment was begun and, within a few days, the area developed a healthy appearing scab and evidence of epithelialization around the periphery. The wound healed totally within 3 weeks. Full-Thickness Wounds: A yearling Arabian filly developed an infected wound involving the flexor tendon sheath. After surgical debridement, the wound was 3.4 cm in diameter an 1.3 cm deep. Treatment with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel was initiated immediately after the surgery in order to encourage granulation of the wound. Within 3 days of treatment, the lesion was filling rapidly with granulation tissue. Treatment was discontinued at that time in order to limit potential proud flesh accumulation. An excellent post-operative result was achieved. A thoroughbred mare sustained an injury to the chest which resulted in a V-shaped skin flap about 10 cm on each side. Healing appeared to progress normally for about two weeks. After a third week in which little further progress was noted, a daily wash with hydrogen peroxide followed by treatment with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel was initiated. Wound size began to rapidly decrease and, by Day 4, the wound measured 4 cm on each side. By Day 11, the wound was 1.5 x 0.5 cm. Total wound healing was anticipated when the horse was released to the owner. Fistula: An adult female llama developed an actively draining fistula tract on the left side of the abdomen. Exploratory surgery was performed, resulting in two wounds of 8 and 10 cm in diameter. Perforated surgical tubing connecting the two wounds was left in place and the wounds were flushed with povidone iodine twice daily. Six days post surgery, the tubing was removed and treatment with Iamin®-Vet gel commenced. After 2 treatments, there was a noticeable of granulation tissue which was filling in the fistula. Continued treatment with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel resulted in reduction of the dorsal wound opening to approximately 2 cm, and complete closure of the ventral opening by Day 18. Treatment was discontinued due to the difficulty of working with this animal resulting in subsequent reopening of the fistula tract, and the animal was sent for surgical evaluation. The treating veterinarian was very impressed with the excellent response observed with the Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel treatment and felt the wound would have totally healed with continued treatment. Lacerations: An older Arabian mare was examined for vaginal bleeding. A laceration measuring 2.5 by 1.0 cm was found of undetermined origin in the roof of the vaginal vault. Treatment with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel was begun (1 time / day ) for 3 days. The laceration reduced in size by approximately 75% by Day 3, at which time the animal was switched to an anti-hemorrhoidal ointment to control serum seepage from varicose veins. Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel was discontinued at that time. The veterinarian treating this animal was impressed with the rapid closure of the laceration and the relative ease of treatment. A six-month-old thoroughbred received extensive injuries to its front legs and chest area after running through a barbed wire fence. These wounds failed to respond to systemic antibiotics administered by a veterinarian, and remained open and infected after 2 weeks of therapy. One wound was very deep with purulent drainage. Treating this wound twice daily with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel eliminated the infection within a few days. Granulation tissue filled the wound and a scab formed a short time later. After approximately 3 weeks, the wound was totally healed via contraction, leaving only a small residual scar. A thirteen year old quarter horse received a 3 cm long laceration to the anterior aspect of the right upper leg. Veterinary treatment involved opening the wound to allow drainage, Furacin® spray treatment for 1 week, and a course of systemic antibiotics for 1 week. The wound continued to be inflamed and swollen with a purulent drainage. Treatment twice daily for 12 days with Iamin®-Vet Skin Care Gel resulted in closure of the wound with a small residual surface scab. There was no indication of residual inflammation or sensitivity. Treatment was continued (once per day) for 7 days. By Day 28, the wound was totally closed with only a small residual scar. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel Pressure Ulcer/Fistula: A large three-legged dog was treated for a pre-existing pressure induced sore on its chest. Multiple courses of therapy, including surgery, were attempted with less than satisfactory outcomes. The lesion had the appearance of an actively draining fistula tract. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel was applied twice daily to the wound, including directly into the fistula. The dog was collared to protect the wound. Granulation tissue was evident in the fistula within 4 days, and a thick protective scab began to form. During the second week of treatment, the dog aggravated the wound while exercising. Treatment was continued for 3 more weeks when the dog was returned to its owners. The condition of the wound was significantly improved with the closure of the fistula almost totally complete by contraction and epithelialization. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel treatment was successful in inducing a rapid proliferation of granulation tissue leading to closure via contraction and epithelialization, following the failure of traditional therapies. Full-Thickness Limb Wounds: A dog suffered traumatic full- thickness loss of skin to the forelimb. This area measured approximately 2.5 cm in diameter and initially had the appearance of being locally infected. Systemic antibiotic therapy was begun in conjunction with Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel treatment twice daily. Granulation tissue was apparent within one week and new epidermis was evident at the wound periphery. The wound decreased in size by 50%, within 10 days. The wound was totally re-epithelialized, after 14 days of treatment. A cat suffering from a traumatic loss of skin on the forelimb, extending from mid-forearm to the wrist, was treated with Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel twice daily for 28 days at which time the skin had almost entirely grown back over the injury site. The animal received traditional antibiotic therapy in addition to the Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel, and wore a protective collar to prevent disturbance of the wound healing process. The wound totally re- epithelialized within 6 weeks. It was felt by the veterinarian that such an extensive loss of full-thickness skin would have required a more aggressive approach and that the Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel greatly enhanced the healing process. In addition, he was impressed with the quality of healing and the rapid regrowth of hair. Chronic Dermal Ulcer/Lick Granuloma: A dog presented with an indolent draining ulcer on the mid-forelimb, origin and time of onset unknown. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel was applied to the wound site for 14 days, at which time the size of the wound was reduced from 2 cm to 0.5 cm in diameter. Granulation tissue was apparent after the first several treatments and the ulcer was totally healed within 21 days via contraction and epithelialization. A lick granuloma that had developed adjacent to the ulcer was similarly treated during this time period and was observed to be healed within the same 21 day period. Chronic Abscess: A cat presented with an infected abscess located near the anus. The abscess formed a pocket measuring more than 3 cm in diameter. Surgical excision of the surrounding tissue resulted in a large (6 cm diameter) defect. Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel was applied twice daily to the wound site. Within two weeks, the wound developed a healthy granulation bed and scabbing. Epithelialization was apparent at the wound edges along with a reduction of surface area. The wound was virtually healed after 4 weeks of treatment. Back to Iamin-Vet Skin Care Gel
